The Purpose of Relationships: A Balancing Act of Support and Challenge

I had an interesting conversation today with someone who asked me, "What do you think the purpose of relationships are?"

In my book, TNT: TeeNage Transformation, I talk about the purpose of dating and why it's important to know your reason for dating so you'll avoid wandering aimlessly through relationships and actually have a set goal in mind. (For example: Are you dating just to have fun? To seek out options for a possible future spouse? Do you hope to one day get married? These are all important things to consider to make sure you and your partner are on the same page!)

But the purpose of relationships in general is a little different. Personally, I believe that relationships are meant to be a balance of both Challenge and Support. They are meant to challenge us into becoming better people, inspiring us to become the best version of ourselves, and push us to our limits of growth and reaching our full potential. I believe they are also meant to support and encourage us. It's important to have a relationship in which we feel we are being valued, acknowledged, cared for, and can have that "shoulder to cry on." In other words, someone to trust, confide in, and know that even if you share your deepest secrets with that person, that you will still be accepted by them.

Take note though, that there MUST be a BALANCE of Challenge AND Support. If you have only support, neither individual is growing neither as a couple, nor individually. The relationship flat-lines because there's no challenge in helping the relationship grow, become stronger, better, and more intimate than it was before. Life thrives on contrasts, and it is no different in relationships.

However, if you have TOO much Challenge and not enough support; if there is constant strife and argumentativeness, if the moments where you get along as a couple are rare, then the relationship you have is dysfunctional and there's not really a point to staying in it if both of you are completely miserable!

So as I hope you can see, relationships are meant to be a balanced act of both Challenge & Support.

I hope you found this post interesting or informative, and I'd LOVE to hear what YOUR perspective on the purpose of relationships is, so please feel free to comment below!
Have a wonderful week everybody! :-) xoxo

The 3 Components of Spectacular Love: How to Create a Love that Lasts

Lately I've been contemplating a lot about what components constitute a
The Hebrew Symbol for Love, "Ahava"

lasting, fulfilling, and spectacular loving relationship. I know there are many key ingredients necessary to make a relationship last, like openness, ability to communicate, compromise, and even sometimes make self-sacrificing decisions.

But if you're anything like me, you'll research something until you find a solid answer! So that's what I did, and I found an interesting consistency in what I found. Listen up! Because here are the 3 ingredients to having a spectacular, lasting, and satisfying relationship of a lifetime!

A few months ago, I heard a love coach and relationship expert by the name of Cherry Norris say that there are 3 things a romantic relationship must have in order for it to flourish. Those 3 things were: Like, Lust, and Love:

Like—Meaning that you actually enjoy the company of the person you are with. This is a more of a friendship-based kind of feeling. If you have great chemistry with someone, yet there’s nothing more, and something about them rubs you the wrong way, if you despise that person or can’t stand being in their presence, then don’t tolerate it! That person is obviously not for you. (This should be obvious, but you'd be surprised as to what some people put up with!)

Lust—This is referring to the sexual chemistry between a couple. You can have a relationship that lacks the lust, but it’s most likely you’ll feel only friendship towards them and not much else. The relationship won’t feel as fulfilling as it could be without this component.

Love—This goes beyond physical or sexual attraction and friendship. The love aspect of a relationship is having a deep emotional connection, affinity towards that person, and desire to be with them on a whole other level. Love is not a selfish desire, as lust can often be, but is completely self-less in its nature and has a desire to give to that person even without expectancy of anything in return. Love is a genuine concern for the other person’s well-being.

To gain a better understanding of what these terms really mean, we’re going to have a little lesson in Greek 101. In Greek, here are the three words that help us further comprehend the 3 components of spectacular love:

The first word is:

Philos—(“Like”) This is a brotherly love, completely platonic, or the kind of love you have for your friends. Philos is the root of where we get words like “philanthropic”—it has nothing to do with romance or sex, just an affinity and loving devotion similar to that between a mother and child. It’s also where we get the word “philoprogenitive.”

The next word is:

Eros—(“Lust”) This is a romantic lust, sexual desire, or sexual yearning. Eros was the ancient Greek god of carnal love, son of Aphrodite (goddess of love). This term also refers to libido or sex drive. It’s the root of where we get words like “erotic.”

And lastly,

Agape—(“Love”) T his kind of love is unconditional and all-consuming. It is a love that is not sexual, but spiritual in its nature. It’s a non-erotic love that is selfless and can be seen in Christ’s relationship (or God’s loving relationship) towards us humans.

The last correlation I want to make is between these words comes from the Hebrew language. In Hebrew, the 3 words depicting different types of love are: Raya, Dod, and Ahava.

Raya—The “Friendship” aspect of a relationship. Its Greek equivalent is Philos. It literally means best friend, companion, neighbor, or soul-mate. In the Bible, we see in the book of Song of Songs (or Songs of Solomon) one of the greatest collection of love poems that uses this word “Raya:”

“How beautiful you are, my darling [Raya]! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes are doves.” Song of Songs 1:15

“Like a lily among thorns is my darling [Raya] among the maidens.” Song of Songs 2:2

“How beautiful you are, my darling! Oh, how beautiful! Your eyes behind your veil are doves. Your hair is like a flock of goats descending from Mount Gilead." Song of Songs 4:1

"All beautiful you are, my darling [Raya]; there is no flaw in you." Song of Songs 4:7

Dod—The “Intimacy” or sexual element of a relationship. The Greek equivalent of “Eros.” Dod can literally translate to the word “lover,” “beloved,” “bridegroom,” or “fiancĂ©.” It can also refer to the physical act of love-making and can translate as “to carouse,” “to rock,” or, “to fondle.” Dod is also seen many times in the book of S.O.S:

“Let him kiss me with kisses of his mouth, for his love [Dod] is more delightful than wine.” -Song of Songs 1:2

"My lover [Dod] is to me a sachet of myrrh resting between my breasts.” -Song of Songs 1:13

“Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my lover [Dod] among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste”- Song of Songs 2:3

“Your mouth [is] like the best wine. May the wine go straight to my lover [Dod], flowing gently over lips and teeth...The mandrakes send out their fragrance, and at our door is every delicacy, both new and old, that I have stored up for you, my [Dod]." –Song of Songs 7:9 & 13

"Come, let us drink our fill of love [Dod] until morning; Let us delight ourselves with caresses.”
-Proverbs 7:18

Ahava—The final word, Ahava, is the “Commitment” aspect of a relationship. Similar to the Greek word, “Agape.” This is a strong and powerful emotion that leads to commitment. It makes sacrifices to meet the other person’s needs. It is love of the will, a choice, it is making the decision of commitment that joins your life to another’s and is far deeper than the fleeting feelings of romance or sexual desire. This love is so powerful, that in the book of Songs of Solomon, it is described to be as strong as death:

“Many waters cannot quench the flame of love [Ahava]; rivers cannot wash it away.” Song of Songs 8:7

“Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love [Ahava] is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.” Song of Songs 8:6

One thing I’ve recognized, is that as humans, we were created to experience these three types of love together, not separate. Many relationships today often pursue the “Dod,” the sexual aspect, without having the “Raya” or “Ahava,” the friendship, and deep loving, self-sacrificing concern and commitment—and therefore they miss out on all of the fullness and joy that a loving, committed, and deeply spiritually-connected relationship that love has to offer. There’s also a progression of these types of love—there’s an order in which them come. If you pursue the sexual element “Dod” first, without having experienced the friendship or having the commitment of “Ahava” you risk missing out and losing on how truly spectacular love in its fullest can be.

I’d like to leave you off with one last thought to meditate on that will help you further grasp what love truly is:

“Love is patient,

Love is Kind.

It does not envy,

It does not boast,

It is not proud.
It does not dis-honor others,

It is not self-seeking,

It is not easily angered,

It keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the Truth.

It always protects,

Always Trusts,

Always Hopes,

Always Preserves.

Love never fails.”

-1 Corinthians 13:4-8

May you honor love, and be inspired not to settle for just one of these 3 forms over another, but pursue love in all its fullness, and experience all that it has to offer!

In the Spetrum of Eternity, Will This Really Matter?

With our fast-paced, consumer-driven, pedal-to-the-metal world we live in, it can be so easy to get caught up in the “living for the now” mentality and forget that there’s so much more to life than meets-the-eye. Here are a few scriptural references to help keep your mind focused and centered on maintaining an eternal mindset rather than simply “living for the now.”
“There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
Lately I’ve been catching myself constantly thinking about, worrying about, or even obsessing about certain things like work, buying clothes, or even what kind of people I should date (and the list goes on and on!) And while there certainly is a time for everything, I find myself repeatedly getting caught in the disillusionment that somewhere in the midst of those things I desire I will find true joy and fulfillment. What’s ironic is that it’s exactly the opposite is true. While material items may bring me a temporary joy; that joy is fleeting—it’s a pleasure that’s here one moment and gone the next. It’s when I pursue the things I think will make me happy, that I end up feeling even more empty than before! Only when I spend the time in pursuing and getting closer to God, seeking His will, plan, and purpose for my life that I feel truly fulfilled and at peace.

“I find myself getting caught in the disillusionment that somewhere in the midst of the [material] things I desire, that I will find true joy and fulfillment. What’s ironic is that it’s exactly the opposite is true.”
When I find myself worrying about certain things, or feeling overly concerned about something, I find it helps to take a moment and ask myself: “In the spectrum of eternity, will this really matter?” It certainly puts things into perspective! Many things I consider important and worth my time, money, and energy, quickly lose importance on my list of priorities when I consider them in relation to my time spent in eternity with my Creator. It also helps to re-focus your mind onto what matters by filling your mind with God’s word which reminds us there is so much more to life than just this human existence alone. Here are a few of my favorite verses when it comes to reminding myself of what it is that truly matters:

When you find yourself feeling stressed or overly concerned or worried about things in this world, take a moment to ask yourself: “In the spectrum of eternity, will this really matter?” I can guarantee your perspective will change!
“There’s far more here than meets the eye. The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow. But the things we can’t see now will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
“Let heaven fill your thoughts, don’t waste your time worrying about things down here.” Colossians 3:2
“If God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and gone tomorrow, won't he more surely care for you? … So don't worry about having enough food or drink or clothing. Your heavenly Father already knows all your needs, and He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries of its own.” –Matthew 6:30-34
“Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven, and all else will be given you besides.” Matthew 6:33, Luke 12:31
“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” -1 Peter 1:24-25, Isaiah 40:6-8

Many things we would consider of importance or worth our time, money, and energy, quickly lose importance on our list of priorities when we consider them in relation to our time spent in eternity with our Creator.

Love is a Drug... Use Wisely!

the things I talk about is how one of the aspects of being in love is based on a chemical dependency for the person of our interest. Even thinking of the person who we admire, like, or love causes our brains to release all kinds of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin. Our brains reward us with these pleasure hormones whenever we think of, or spend time with this person, and can therefore cause us to become chemically addicted to that person! Crazy, huh?

Even thinking of the person who we admire, like, or love causes our brains to release all kinds of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin.

There’s one hormone in particular that can cause some serious emotional damage if not properly managed or kept in its place. This hormone is called Oxytocin, and it’s released after any kind of physical or emotional intimacy, with its largest amounts released after sex. It’s been referred to by many scientists and doctors as the body’s own “love drug” or “love potion” because the surge of pleasure that Oxytocin causes is similar to that of taking heroin or cocaine!
Oxytocin has been referred to by many scientists and doctors as the body’s own “love drug” or “love potion” because its pleasure release is similar to that of taking heroin or cocaine!

Oxytocin is the reason why it’s possible to become chemically addicted to another person, and therefore the reason why we should be careful of whom we become “addicted” to. Women in particular need to be on guard of who they may become attached to, because while Oxytocin enhances the bonding and attachment levels in men 5 times their normal level after sleeping with someone, the bonding and attachment levels of women increase 12 times their normal level after sleeping with someone! Oxytocin is the reason why women typically become more attached after sex than men do. Not to say that men don’t experience attachment, it’s just that the attachment is much stronger in women than it is in men. To me, the bonding effects of Oxytocin is just scientific proof of the verses in the ancient biblical texts of Mark and Genesis when it says that "the two become one" (Mark 10:8, Genesis 2:24) in marriage, or after sex.  Sex is a uniting experience.

Oxytocin is the reason why it’s possible to become chemically addicted to another person, and therefore the reason why we should be careful of whom we become “addicted” to.

When it comes down to it, love and sex are really like a drug. They both cause our bodies to release feel good hormones just like that of an actual drug. And therefore, just like any other drug, love can have its side effects if not used with wisdom, caution, and in the proper context. Columnist, Nicole Hoelle explains the possible side-effects of this “love drug:”
“The combination of these chemicals can be particularly disruptive if there isn’t any sort of solid relationship in place. [The woman is] left flooded with chemicals which cause her to yearn for and crave this man, and even become obsessed. If the craving is not satisfied, she “crashes” and undergoes symptoms similar to those of a drug addict’s withdrawal, including depression, agitation, anxiety, irritability and despair [...] Left with an enormous emotional and physical desire for someone she cannot have, her mind and body thrown into a state of unbalance the woman only wants is to have her craving satisfied, and this can cause her to experience the symptoms, according to Dr. Helen Fisher (of Rutgers University), of someone with ‘mental illness’” (Hoelle).
The “side effects” of this “love drug,” included attachment, and possible emotional instability if a committed relationship is not set in place.

As you can see, the side effects of this love drug can be particularly harmful and disruptive if a committed relationship is not set in place. It’s something you might want to consider the next time you’re contemplating “casual” copulation, or sleeping with someone with whom you’re not quite sure where the relationship is going. In doing so, you could save yourself a lot of wasted time and heart-break by choosing to be wise with how you use this “love drug.”

As always, I hope you found that post useful and I wish you all a wonderful week! Take care everyone, and use your “love drug” wisely! ;-)

Guard your Thoughts

It is so important to guard our thoughts and the way we perceive ourselves, because how we perceive ourselves affects everything we do.

“As a man thinks in his heart, so he becomes” (Proverbs 23:7).

The Bible tells us that, “As a man thinks in his heart, so he becomes” (Proverbs 23:7). This Proverb is telling us that what we believe about ourselves, what we hold to be true about ourselves, actually determines what kind of person we become.

We live in a way that is in accordance with our beliefs and what we perceive to be true.

You've probably heard the quote:
“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”
And it's true; it all starts with what goes on in your mind!

Everything you do begins with a thought. And the kind of thoughts you're thinking determine what kind of actions and behavior you will have. What gets me most excited about these truths however, are all the new discoveries in the field of positive psychology which scientifically prove the truth behind these age-old wisdoms.

Shawn Achor, author of the Best-selling book The Happiness Advantage and one of the world's leading experts in happiness and human potential explains, "Studies show that simply believing we can bring about positive change in our lives increases motivation and job performance; [and] that success, in essence, becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy... Amazingly, [an individual's] belief in their own ability is an even stronger predictor of job performance [and success] than the actual level of skill or training they had." How amazing is that! An individual’s belief of whether or not they can perform a task is more powerful than their actual training or ability!

An individual’s belief of whether or not they can perform a task is more powerful than their actual training or ability.

Think of it this way: A person who considers themselves unattractive will likely go through life feeling a low self-esteem and negatively towards themselves, unless this person can learn to focus on their attractive qualities, and make an emphasis on their positive attitude and personality instead of their undesired physical features. If they don't change their perspective about themselves, then their belief about themselves being unattractive will be more of a hindrance then their actual suppose lack of physical appeal. It's not about the individual’s looks, but their feelings and perception about their looks which then cause them to act, perform, and behave in a way that is either beneficial and productive, or harmful and destructive.

Success is not so much determined by the individual’s abilities, but their feelings and perception about their abilities which then cause them to act, perform, and behave in a way that is either beneficial and productive, or harmful and destructive.

Let me give another example.
A person who believes they will not go anywhere in life, or believes they are an unintelligent loser with no future is going to live in a way that is in accordance with those beliefs. Meaning, it is likely they will not make much of an effort to get an education, and they may fall into drugs, alcohol abuse, or other non-productive behavior, all because of their self-image and the way they perceive themselves. We are more prone into giving into self-destructive tendencies and habits if our self-image is distorted and our thinking is off-balance. If we believe that we are unsuccessful, stupid, or a loser, we will live and act in a way that is in accordance with those beliefs. But, if we believe that we have the ability to succeed, triumph over circumstances, that we are loveable, and beautiful in our own way, then we will live a life that is in accordance with success, striving to be the best we can be, and living to our full potential. Numerous studies discussed in The Happiness Advantage have repeatedly proven "how strongly our beliefs can affect our abilities." Achor writes that our "beliefs are so powerful because they dictate our efforts and actions." How you perceive yourself and what you believe to be true about yourself are so important because they will determine how you feel, act, and ultimately the choices you make which determine the course of your life.

“Beliefs are so powerful because they dictate our efforts and actions.” –Shawn Achor

Remember what it says in Proverbs 27:3? "As we think in our hearts, so we become." If our self-image is distorted and our thinking is off-balance then we will be more prone into giving into self-destructive tendencies and habits. If we can learn to guard our thoughts, recognize when they get off-balance, and make continuous and gradual changes towards developing a healthy self-image and mindset, we will prevent ourselves from the possible downfall of negative self-fulfilling prophecy. As Achor explains it, "By changing the way we perceive ourselves and our work, we can dramatically improve our results." In order to begin changing the way you perceive yourself, you need to begin focusing on all your strengths and reasons as to why you will succeed rather than fail. This does not mean ignoring your weaknesses. It simply means choosing to put a positive emphasis on your strengths which will boost your confidence, self-belief, and in turn, will actually alter and improve your ability to soar to new heights and accomplish new goals--all because you changed your perspective onto your abilities and successes rather than weaknesses and failures.
